Special
Olympics news.
Following last years Area Games
which were very successful and enjoyed by
all who took part the regional events are
now almost compleded.
It was great to see an event taking
place in Ulster for the first time. This
was hosted by Omagh Group RDA, and while
they probably tried to cater for too
large a number of riders it was a good
day.
Connaught held their event in
Ballinasloe in March and all riders who
had qualified from last year took part
and had a very enjoyable experience.
East Region of Leinster held their
event in Cherryorchard Equestrian Centre
on the 30th March. Many thanks to the
staff of this centre for their help and
support. This day went very well and the
arrival of two members of the Garda
Mounted Team were greeted with great
excitment.
Leinster held the Regional Event in
Kill Equestrian Centre on the 21st of
April. In February we had run a Dressage
and Equitation Day for the Independent
Level Riders which was part of the
Regional Games, these riders took part in
Trail Ride Competition on the 21st of
April. It is good to see an increase in a
level competitors this year and hope this
will continue.
Thanks to the Flanelly Family for
the use of the Great Facilities in Kill.
Munster have still to hold their
Regional Event and this will take place
on the 28th of May.
Selection for next year's National
Games will be made later in the year and
all who qualified are anxiously looking
forward to hearing if they will be going
to Limerick next Summer.
Special Olympics would like to
thank all the wonderful volunteers who
make these events so enjoyable for the
Athletes and who never complain about
long days and hard work.
Shirley MacDermott.
